When my children were little, I often made aniseed milk on cold winter evenings.  A steaming cup of creamy milk with a spoonful of aniseed syrup, just before bedtime.  It gave them glowing, ruddy cheeks and sleepy eyes, and it smelled irresistibly delicious.  The seed pods of an anise star can glow as warm red as my children’s cheeks when they were so small.
